It's a special speakeasy that requires a password just to get in. There's a time limit for your stay and you can't take pictures inside. That being said, I have yet to go. However, I did find myself at their sister bar, Rickhouse on a particular special Saturday night.
Unlike Bourbon, Rickhouse is a fun, laid back bar where it's a bit too crowded, a bit too loud, and a lot of bit fun. On this Saturday, I was out with Phil, Oli and her husband Peter for a fun double date. (I guess that's what you do when you get old.) We stumbled into Rickhouse around 10:30-11:00. It had a little bit of a line, but wasn't too bad. <strike> I don't do long lines.</strike> We managed to macgyver a spot at the bar, and the rest of the night is history. No not really, maybe for Peter, but the rest of us had a great time.
Like Bourbon and Branch, Rickhouse has a punch bowl. Personally I hate sweet drinks, but the punch seems to be a hit with most ladies. We decided to just get personal drinks and Phil started out with an Old Fashion, Peter got bourbon neat (bye bye Peter), and Oli and I couldn't decide. This is when me being my annoying self started asking the bartender to create us something yummy and good. And he delivered. I can't tell you much of what they were called. One was an Airplane maybe? Anyway, the goods were great. Everything is made fresh, right in front of you with the freshest ingredients. Not too pricey either for an establishment like that. I would recommend asking the bartender for his favorite or get something good like an Old Fashioned or Moscow Mule. This is a place you want to go back to the oldies, and not get something like a vodka-soda: true story someone ordered four, I wanted to cry. They also have beer on tap for those who don't like hard alcohol, but come on people be adventurous!
Normally I hate it. And that is not because I am single. I have always had a Valentine, I just hate it. It's a stupid holiday with stupid expectations and stupid expensive things. That being said, this year my bf, Phil, took me to San Diego for a vacation. Fun city, but wouldn't want to live there...anyway we went out to celebrate Valentine's day and it was one of the best meals I have had in a long time.
My friend Chris (the one from the Sac posts) is from San Diego, so we asked him for some hints on where to go. He is a big foodie and recommended Bencotto. I am SO glad I listened to him because it was unreal.
The best part about the restaurant was its service. Our waitress was so helpful and didn't rush us at all. We ended up having dinner for 2 hours, and it was awesome. We had a huge glass of wine. Like one of the biggest pours I have ever seen at a restaurant. Then we ordered the Caprese and spicy meatballs. They were both amazing. The Caprese Salad was so good. It was a huge chunk of fresh mozzarella with beautiful tomatoes. The only way it could have been better would be if it were heirloom tomatoes, but besides that it had basil puree on top and vinegar beautifully crafted throughout the plate. The meatballs were the big hit. I absolutely love meatballs (if you can't tell from my many meatball sandwiches). These were in spicy marina sauce. They were small but so moist and delicious (sorry SMo, I know you hate that word.) I highly recommend the meatballs. I also would have liked to try the prosciutto and melon app or the risotto balls but Phil isn't too keen on too many carbs or melons for that matter.
For dinner Phil got the Chicken Parm but instead of mashed potatoes he got the homemade spaghetti with meat sauce. The pasta is so amazing here, getting anything else would be a mistake. I don't know why he got chicken parm - to be honest it wasn't anything special but he liked it. I got the lasagna. It was easily one of the best things I have ever had. It isn't your typical American lasagna. The pasta is so thinly sliced and it has fresh marina sauce with great chunks of meat. I highly recommend it. And the leftovers were amazing after a night of drinking.
In fact, for this past Valentine's Day, the bf bought me a nice expensive cab instead of a bouquet of flowers - he knows the way to my heart. Being so close to wine county means good quality for cheap prices. It also means lots and lots of options.
One of the best places to go in the city is just a few blocks from my house. Amelie is absolutely delightful. (Disclaimer, I lived in Paris for a summer so I am a bit obsessed with all things French.) It is a lively wine bar owned and run by a Frenchman. It seems that everyone who works here is from Paris, which meant that the more I drank the more I tried to speak French. I loved trying to talk to them and ask them which were their favorite wines. I don't know if they loved hearing me butcher the language.
The best part about Amelie are the wine flights. During happy hour it is $10 for three flights of your choice. It lasts from 5:30-7:00 but often they honor the prices even longer. I can't recommend any wines because honestly you can't go wrong. The staff is very helpful and will answer any questions you have.
Another stereotypical thing about the So-Cal in me is that I love Mexican food. I am born and raised in Venice, CA; land of foodies and ethnic eateries galore. But my father - well he just loves spice. So that meant Mexican food at least three times a week.
The worst thing about moving to the Bay Area was that I had to say bye bye to all good Mexican food. I am sorry SF but you just can't compete with Southern California - NOT EVEN THE MISSION. I know there are people out there that will hurt me for saying this, but it's true. Because of my strong love for Mexican food, I often crave it and search for anything resembling a burrito or taco. Usually I come up empty handed. However, on one such occasion I meandered into Tacolicious in the Marina, and boy was I impressed.
Inside it feels a bit divey, a bit like a speakeasy. The booths are a great touch. All in all it's not a bad place to start out your night. Definitely a place to stop off early in the night as it is realitvely cheap, but after that I would move somewhere more fun like McTeagues or Lush.
Even if you visit just to make fun of my food addiction, or if it helps get you to try new places - thank you! I reached a thousand views last week and that was more than I ever expected from this little site.

On to the post. So after all of my food and booze lately, I realized that it was time to start my work out regime. As its the first of the year and I have a wedding in -80 days (thanks to the couple who has the countdown all over facebook), it was time to get moving. My friend Jess just bought a groupon for Bikram Yoga and invited me along. So of course instead of studying I decided to try it out. Two things you should know ahead of time are 1. its hot 2. it smells. If you can get past that, then you will get into great shape!
It was an hour and a half of hot, sticky, smelly athleticism. Although I haven't done yoga in a few years, I still had some flexibility in me and was able to hold my own. I only had one moment where I thought I might get sick, but besides that it was great. It was a nice venue with a lot of accessibility on BART and the bus, and tons of restaurants in the area. The yoga was both easy but also was a struggle. Even experts will be tested. After burning 700-800 calories, there is a little juice shop around the corner that has fresh squeezed juices and smoothies. There was a long wait, but it was pretty good. Kind of expensive though, so you may want to invest in your own juicer if Bikram Yoga seems to be your thing.
I have already mentioned one of my favs in the Tenderloin, Morty's, but I love sandwiches so much I want to share more. This weekend I was out in the Sunset with the in-laws, so I got to visit one of my favorite spots: Guerra Quality Meats.
Guerra has SO many options. It isn't just a sandwich place: it has soup, ravioli, bread, cheese, deli meats, chicken parm; the list goes on. I recently had the chicken soup. It's okay but it needs a lot of pepper...however, this post is about their sandwiches, because man they're good.
This weekend I bought the Roma sandwich: pesto, turkey, lettuce, tomato, onion. It comes with mozzarella, but as a lac-tard I have to ask for no cheese. Tragedy I know. This sandwich was amazing. I usually get my sandwiches on ciabatta bread but all the bread comes from ACME, which if you are from SF you know its the best bread up here (sorry Boudin).
My favorite thing about Guerra's is that they have a sandwich creation where you can make anything you want. Normally I make my own turkey, or, if I'm splurging, a meatball sandwich. The dutch crunch is pretty good too. You really can't go wrong. And now they are open 7 days a week!
Because he is born and raised in SF, when he comes back to visit we usually eat at his favorite childhood spots. However, every once in a blue moon I can convince him to try something new. On one such occasion, we yelped (always a GREAT idea if I haven't blogged something yet) and found Cordon Bleu. And boy am I glad we did.
Cordon Bleu sounds like a French meal, or a culinary school, or anything besides a hole-in-the-wall Vietnamese restaurant serving up THEE best 5-spiced chicken I have ever had. (Side note, I've never been to Vietnam.)
The menu is short and to the point. You either order chicken or shish kebabs, which are more like large slabs of meat than anything Persian. I have only ever ordered one thing and will only ever order it. The Noodle Salad with Chicken instead of Shish Kebabs. It is HUGE. Literally two people should eat it. <strike>Naturally I finish the whole thing in one sitting.</strike> It is vermicilli noodles with a gigantic portion of grilled chicken and the ever so tastey imperial roll (which is a much better version of an egg roll). However, I can also say that everything else on the menu is great. Despite my lack of creation, the bf gets a different item each time. (So I guess really I'm the lame one who is stuck in her way). The shish kebob with the meat sauce is great. Its like a tasty gravy over rice, again with an imperial roll. He loves the meat sauce with either the chicken, shish kebob or both!
When I have a hankering for Chinese food there is really only one place that I want - San Tung.

Outside the store on Irving Street

San Tung is an addiction. Once you try it, you honestly will crave it all the time. The first thing you have to order here is the chicken. You could try nothing else except the dry fried chicken wings (bone in or out) and not miss a thing.

However, if you are hungry for more, I recommend the dumplings (pork or shrimp and chive), any kind of noodles (I prefer Chow Mein) as well as the green beans - they are to die for and almost as famous as the chicken. You really could order anything on the menu.

Some more suggestions: Mushu pork, fried rice, Kung Pao chicken, and Mongolian beef. Despite sounding like a gringo I will promise you that even the bf orders it (and he's Chinese).
Which means there are tons of places to choose from. However, you will always wait in line. One of my favorite spots (that is both well priced and delicious) is Brenda's French Soul Food. Tucked in the quaint Tenderloin, this place might seem a bit out of place, but it is in a generally safe area with ample street parking. It is also blocks away from the courthouse if you happen to have jury duty (sorry that sucks).
My girlfriends and I got a great groupon for the Opera and had a dress up night. The Opera Building is a site to see on its own! Come early so you have time to walk around the building and see all the views. Pick an Opera of your choice, and wear your fancy shoes. Some people dress in black tie, and others wear jeans so you can choose. And don't worry if you can't understand Italian, apparently these days Opera's come with subtitles.
An awesome concert in Golden Gate Park. Even if you don't like bluegrass, it is a great time. And its free! Grab a six pack and a blanket and make your way in the afternoon. Set up camp in front of a stage. There are lots of food options but the best part is you can bring your own. Must see!
3. Blue Angels Flyover - September/October
One of the biggest events in San Francisco, the city pretty much explodes with fun. The weekend started because the military takes their leave in the city for the weekend. It is now called Fleet Week. Soldiers, beer, and fly overs from the Blue Angels. This year it was also America Cup trials, so it was a bit of a disaster. The best seat in the house is down by the water, either on the Marina Green or at Fisherman's wharf. The jets are so loud that you may jump out of your seat!
4. Macy's Christmas Tree Lighting -Thanksgiving
Christmas is THEE best holiday of the year. Every year Macy's decorates their store and Union Square. On Black Friday they have a big tree lighting ceremony with Carolers and a count down to the lights. It is a bit like Disneyland, and I would only recommend if you have kids with you. Its VERY crowded. But for those not into Tree Lighting Ceremonies, visit Macy any other day and see the puppies and kitties they put in their window. Too cute for words, AND if you love them you can adopt them! Macy's works with SPCA to help these poor animals find a home for the holidays.
The last time I went I got a Turkey Burger in hopes to be healthy. DON'T DO IT! Don't try to be healthy and skip the fries, the onion rings, the malts and more importantly the beefy goodness that is a burger. The turkey burger was just sad, don't do it. My friend Ronnie ALWAYS gets the Buffalo Burger - yes Buffalo. He loves it. My other friend Mike and I have compared the chocolate shake to the chocolate malt - get the malt, its heaven. I really can't say anything bad about this place except that I cannot go to often or I will have a heart attack. Must eat in the Civic Center AND anywhere in SF!
She is getting married next year so we had a lot to catch up on. We decided to grab happy hour (I'm a law student and she's getting married...aka we are poor) at Crow Bar.
It was pretty empty when we got there at 5:15. Their happy hour ends at 6:00PM, but by the time we left at around 6:45 it was PACKED. Lots of people come here after work or to meet up with their friends. LOTS of Cougars. If you don't know what that means, great for you. Anyway we both ordered a glass of wine from their happy hour menu. Kellie got the parmesean gnocci which looked good. I had to order an app from their main menu because I'm lac-tard and most things had cheese in it. Such is life...
After we finished our plates, they were quickly taken away but our waitress did not come back once to ask us how we were doing and if we needed anything else. The next time she came she just dropped off our check - without us asking! I thought this was pretty rude, but I have heard a lot of bad comments about their service. I also think their food, albeit delicious, is overpriced. What happy hour entree is $9! And its pasta in a tiny dish. Anyway, I would come again, but just for happy hour. Even though the burgers supposed to be good, I think other places in CDM are better food, prices, and service.
My meal was so big I literally only ate half of it and couldn't eat for the rest of the day. And that's saying a lot because I eat. The cornbread french toast is the best thing I have ever eaten. EVER. If you don't get this you may as well not come here. The open-face omelet has everything you could ever want, and if you don't love eggs you won't even know they're there. The boo ate his whole plate plus some of mine. His french toast was with cinanmon bread and was very tastey. But I will say mine was much better. He's currently eating my leftovers as I finish this...
I can't help these things. However... I am back! And I have a lot of food to write about. I tried to think of a good way to blog about everything I have eaten, see or done. But its a lot. So I have decided to do a picture monologue of all the goodies.

First Up: Some OC Spots
1. Tustin Brewing Co. - went here for a Michigan Game (big, big fan of Michigan) because its a Alumni bar. It has a collection of its own microbreweries, but as everything in the OC it was a bit plain. Didn't try to food, probably won't go back unless its for a game.

Full Beer List

2. Muldoons - Fun bar at night. Live music on Fridays. Again typical Irish bar. Came here for food...NOT good! Its so bland and expensive, pass on this! But the bread they give you to start is amazing! So maybe try to just sneak and get this, and maybe some nachos because they looked bomb!
3. Bear Flag - If you have a chance to go here, you must! There is one on Newport Peninsula, always packed and slow, and one at Crystal Cove. The Crystal Cove is also packed, but the service is a bit better. The food is unbelievable. They have a different fresh fish special everyday, and they always have Ahi Poke. The panko tacos are their standard but you cannot go wrong with anything here. Also, if you are a clam chowder fan, GET THIS ONE! It is unbelievable.
After a long night of drinking, nothing is better than the hair of the dog and a little grease to help soak it all up. The Porch has just the right amount of all of that. Although its a bit pricey for an every weekend kind of spot, it is PERFECT for out of town visitors and fun occasions. They have regular mimosas as well as your fun Bloody Marys and some specialties such as Mint Julep and Prosecco Berry specialties.
We next went to the seediest place in Sacramento. I don't even remember what it is called, and I don't want any of you to go there...so moving on. We ended the night at DeVere's with a fun session of games and pitchers. It is a great atmosphere, a kind of bougie Irish "pub," pitchers, board games, and lots of space. They don't have dancing from what I could see though - annoying.
(Part 1)So I decided to visit my friend Chris in Sacramento. He unfortunately is also in law school and has more classes than I do, so I decided it would be ever so kind of me to drive out for his birthday. Little did I know that Sacramento is WAY farther from SF than I thought. I mean its only two hours but that is like a hop, skip, and a jump away and then add an hour road trip. Regardless I loaded up the car and headed on an adventure. Also the outlets are on the way so OF COURSE I stopped...
After helping Chris finish a motion for summary judgment (yuck), he decided to treat me for dinner at The Press. He is a bigger foodie than I am, so I knew it would be fabulous and I would be stuffed. We sat outside because it was 90 degrees at 8:30 PM. I got a glass of the house red wine (always the cheapest option and usually pretty good). I recommend asking restaurants what type of wine it is to determine if you like it - Pinot Noir is my favorite. Chris got a glass of scotch neat* (he's a "man" and drinks liquor straight). Then we settled down into the appetizers.

We ordered three apps to share: Fig and Prosciutto (my request and I don't think Chris liked it), Potato Croquettes (tasted just like tater tots), and Fried Meatballs with Greek Yogurt Sauce. The appetizers were really good, and I was already stuffed but we still ordered more.
For dinner, I ordered the Beef Short Rib, Red Wine Sauce and Mashed Potatoes. The Short Rib is so tender and tasted great, but Chris' meal was much better. The Red Wine Sauce was tasty, but plain and the mashed potatoes were just regular mashed potatoes. Chris got the Hanger Steak with potato au gratin in a bordelaise sauce. The potatoes were so good that we got a second order. Seriously if you only eat one thing get the au gratin. They are INCREDIBLE - and potatoes are my thing people. For dessert (yes we were that fatty) we got three scoops of sorbet: cantaloupe, watermelon, and peach. Very refreshing and tasty. Then we went back home to get ready for a fun night on the town!
One of my favorite places in the city happens to be behind my law school. Morty's Deli is the bomb. Yes I am bringing back 1995, but literally its amazing. This isn't really a "new" find for me since I have been eating here forever, but it is too good not to mention.
It is a total SF joint. Has veggie, vegan, gluten free, and meat lover options. I always always always get "The Paulie". It is a roast beef sandwich with Russian dressing, coleslaw, and jack cheese (but I hold the cheese). It isn't a hot sandwich but it is a HUGE sandwich. You will NOT be hungry after eating here. Some other favorites of mine are the Meatball Sub (although not the best), The Golden Gate (if you love prosciutto), The Jake, and the salads are pretty good too. My veggie friendly buddy loves the veg burger, but had a problem with it looking too much like meat. Not to worry they fixed this problem and changed back to normal looking veggie burgers. I have heard the fries are good, but have honestly never had room for any. I know they have some beers on draft too, but because I only attend this abode during lunch I have never had the chance to partake in the alcoholic festivities.
Pluses: takes Credit Card, you can order online for pick up or even delivery near by (a huge plus when studying in the library and can't leave your laptop), and a whole meal is less than $10.
Cons: IT IS NOT OPEN ON THE WEEKEND. This is the worst thing in the world and the reason why it took bub SO long to be able to try it.
The Chowder seems like a small helping but its so rich you almost can't finish all of it. Wash it all down with a Lagunitas IPA and call it a night! (Disclaimer - there was alcohol involved so the food tasted especially good!)
I am so sad to let this gem out of the bag (although it has some of the highest hits on Yelp, so I am sure its not THAT much of a secret anymore). Anyway... bub's parents live in SF and every once in a while we grab dinner and catch up. One of our go to spots is Marnee Thai. It is to die for. There are a lot of Thai places in SF, but Marnee is not only a great bang for your buck, but it's also absolutely fantastic. Special perk - it has lots of dishes other Thai places just don't offer. In fact, they call themselves a "Siamese" restaurant instead of Thai. (see the history of Thailand to read up on Siam)

We went to the 9th and Irving location, and had about a 10 minute wait. Not bad for a place that is always packed. If you have a big party, try making reservations so you get seated. The place is very, very narrow but has a large backroom for bigger parties. Parking is also a bit tough but there are lots of side streets and the N drops you off at the corner.
One of the best things here is the Pad Thai. In fact, I think they were voted #1 in the City or something. A must get if you come here. I always get it with tofu because it's just better that way. I also love Pad See Ew, but its made a little differently here. Still yummy but less bar-b-qued and more steamed, with lots of black pepper. It's amazing with chicken. The bub LOVES the Minced Garlic Chicken; we have sometimes ordered two of it before. And the Yellow Curry is yummy, or Pumpkin Curry if you dare. I will guarantee that anything you order will be absolutely incredible and keep you coming back for more...
Thanks to Off The Grid the food just got even better. I got a beef brisket sandwich from Southern Sandwich which was ENORMOUS. I couldn't even finish it. The sauce they have on the side is phenom and the brisket is served like pulled pork, but not as fatty. I will definitely wait in line for that again. To share with the veggie bro, we got potato salad (pretty good, mayo based) and a Pepper Jack Mac which had me at hello! It was so good, a little spicy and not too cheesy. The sides were only $2 and a healthy heaping. I'm pleased to say I have converted a Food Truck snob!
It is designed like a 1920s Speakeasy and has tons of signature cocktails. It is priced pretty well, $5 Anchor steam on draft of course, and about $10 cocktails. We got a beer and a South Side Cocktail - gin, lemon, sugar, mint, seltzer. The cocktail was great, you could taste enough liquor but had the flavor you look for in a well crafted drink. Will come back here for some bites because the food looked great!
